What Is Stressing America Out?

This article is published in collaboration with Statista

Worry about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is predictably bearing down on the minds of Americans most heavily, relegating the biggest stressor of former years, worry about health care, to rank two. According to the American Psychological Association, 78 percent of U.S. adults reported being stressed out by the pandemic, compared to 66 percent reporting feelings of stress about health care and 62 percent feeling stressed about the occurrence of mass shooting. Only around half of Americans said they experienced stress because of climate change.

In 2019, health care had been the biggest stress inducer for Americans, at 60 percent saying it was causing them stress. Rank three that year went to the presidential election, which 59 percent said they stressed about that year.
