Around 1 million migrants in the U.S. on temporary protections have already seen their status terminated by the Trump administration since last year. Around 360,000 more – from Haiti, Syria, Myanmar and South Sudan – are in legal limbo as appeals are winding their way through the court system after more status terminations in late 2025 and early 2026. On Monday, a federal appeals court temporarily lifted a lower court's block on the end of protections for around 89,000 from Honduras, Nicaragua and Nepal, which had seen the administration try and end their status in the country in August and September. Deportation protections for people under the program from these three countries are now no longer in place.
In October and November, around 600,000 Venezuelans lost their Temporary Protected Status and were told to self-deport. The Supreme Court allowed protections to be removed for a part of the Venezuelans after appeals. In June, the Department of Homeland Security notified almost 500,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and more from Venezuela in the country on the so-called CHNV program that their status had ended, together pushing the number of those losing protections to more than one million. While the Supreme Court allowed the government to proceed as if the Temporary Protected Status of the Venezuelans in question and the CHNV program had ended, the programs are officially considered on hold as lower courts continue to litigate legal challenges to their discontinuation.
Two smaller TPS programs, those for Afghans and Cameroonians, also ended last year and the U.S. government has announced it is ending protections as well for Ethiopians (Feb. 13) and Somalis (Mar. 17). Renewals of status are coming up for program participants from Yemen (Mar. 3) as well as Lebanese, Sudanese, Ukrainians and Salvadorians later in the year.
