As buying a home is becoming more and more unattainable, a car is very high up on the list of the biggest purchases many Americans will ever make. Given that fact, a lot of consideration is put into choosing the right one. But which characteristics do potential buyers in the United States value most? According to data from Statista Consumer Insights, tied at the top of the checklist are fuel efficiency and safety. With 53 percent of respondents who plan to buy a new or used car in the next 12 months, picking these two characteristics as "especially important", they outpunch a low price and high quaility, which 47 and 46 percent of prospective buyers named as key criteria.

Even design isn't as important as the classic TV advert might lead us to believe. Only 32 percent seem to be primarily concerned with the appearance of their new car. It's substance over style for the average car buyer, with 41 percent of respondents saying they prioritize suitability for everyday use.
