With 38.7 million copies sold to date, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has become the best-selling game of the long-running franchise, officially surpassing Mario Kart Wii's already impressive number of 37.4 million lifetime sales. Last year alone, the popular racing game for the Nintendo Switch sold almost ten million copies worldwide. As our chart shows, the title for the fastest-growing Switch game in terms of sales since release belongs to another though.
With roughly nine million units shifted between November 2020 and November 2021, Animal Crossing: New Horizons sits firmly in second place of the most-sold Nintendo Switch games. Having been released in March 2020, the idyllic life simulation hit the market just in time for the first coronavirus lockdowns, which is one explanation for its tremendous rise in popularity. The rest of this top 8 list bears no real surprises, with games from the Mario and Pokémon series securing three and two spots, respectively. Next year, the current installment of the Zelda series might be in familiar company: According to industry rumors, the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, will be released in 2022, and the remaster of the Wii title The Legend of Zelda: Skyword Sword released in July 2021 has already sold 3.6 million copies in its first three months.
Even though Nintendo saw a 20 percent drop in year-over-year profits from April to September 2021, the Japanese gaming giant still managed to accumulate a net profit of $1.5 billion. In June 2021, the company's market cap stood at roughly $75 billion, making it the second-largest video game company in the world.
