Data from the Ukraine Support Tracker at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy released this week shows that aid flow to Ukraine from European countries has picked up as the U.S. ceased support. As of June 30, allocations by EU institutions reached $110 billion, while those by the U.S. continue to stand at $133 billion.
Germany and the United Kingdom continue to be the biggest individual supporters of Ukraine in Europe, while aid from other major economies on the continent including France and Italy has continued to lag. The latter countries have so far committed around 1 percent each of their 2021 GDPs to Ukraine wartime aid, compared to around 1.5 percent in the case of the Germany and even more for many smaller European countries, which have been offering more support for Ukraine in relative and absolute terms. Denmark and Sweden, for example, are Ukraine's seventh and eighth-largest donors when counting EU institutions in rank 2. This is despite the fact that their economies are much smaller than those of France and Italy, which are Europe's third and fourth largest, respectively.
The amounts of Ukraine aid shown include financial support (loans, grants, etc.), humanitarian aid (food, medicine, etc.) and the value of weapons and equipment supplied, including donations in kind for the Ukrainian army and financial aid linked to military purposes.
