The Seasonality of Drowning Deaths

Drowning deaths in the United States follow a clear seasonal pattern. According to CDC data, fatal unintentional drownings peak during the summer months, when more people spend time in and around water. Between June and August, roughly 45 percent of all drowning deaths occur, making this three-month period by far the most dangerous time of the year.
As our chart shows, July typically records the highest number of fatalities, reflecting a combination of school holidays, warm weather and increased recreational water use. Beaches, lakes and swimming pools see a surge in visitors, which can have a negative impact on supervision levels. Alcohol consumption, a known contributing factor in drowning incidents involving teens and young adults, is also more common during the summer months.
The strong seasonality of drowning highlights that risk is closely tied to exposure. As more people enter the water, the likelihood of accidents rises, underscoring the importance of targeted prevention efforts during peak months. Public awareness campaigns, lifeguard presence and parental vigilance are therefore especially critical in summer, when drowning risk is at its highest.
