If you’re thinking of buying a bicycle these days, you better think fast and prepare for a long wait. Not only has the COVID-19 crisis led to a surge in bicycle demand, but supply is also constrained due to the lurking impact of the trade war with China and the lockdown that crippled Chinese factories in early 2020.
As our chart based on UN trade statistics and data from the National Bicycle Dealers Association shows, bicycles made in China have dominated the U.S. bike market for years, consistently accounting for more than 90 percent of total bicycle imports and sales. According to the NBDA, domestic production in 2015 was estimated at around 200,000 units, amounting to a market share of little more than 1 percent.
While sales data isn’t readily available after 2015, import figures are and they show a significant drop in imports from China for 2019, most likely caused by the trade war that has been raging between the two countries for the better part of the past year.
